International operations: transformation without borders
As a firm with an increasingly prominent presence on the international scene, Mattos Filho stands out for our work across many regions and our access to global markets. Our unique service model has allowed us to go beyond Brazil’s borders – despite its continental size – and position Mattos Filho as a leading player in Latin America’s legal markets. 2021 also marked the expansion of our operations in the United States and closer partnership with end clients in London.
With an office in New York since 2007, we have been progressively expanding our services to clients in the United States. We took a step forward in 2021, assisting clients in many other locations around the United States, especially technology and life sciences companies on the West Coast and in Miami.
We focus on providing services to foreign companies who require legal assistance with their interests in Brazil, including via partnerships with overseas law firms. Both our offices in New York and London continue to strengthen our relationships with other leading law firms that rely on Mattos Filho’s expertise to advise their clients on issues related to Brazil and Brazilian legislation. Corporate/M&A partner Rodrigo Ferreira Figueiredo, the resident partner at our London office, noticed significant progress in 2021.
“We began to receive even greater recognition from end-clients – the clients of our partner firms. This is meaningful because it tends to come with time; it is a seal of approval for the quality of our work and the result of strong relationships. 2021 also gave us the opportunity for more face-to-face interaction, to resume meeting directly with our partners and end-clients, which facilitates the construction of close and trustful relationships”

"A physical presence makes a significant difference. Our proximity to foreign clients is an important aspect that allows us to better understand their particular characteristics and needs. Foreign clients often want to discuss more strategic matters and seek a broader view of Brazil to assist in their decision-making – something that goes beyond legal counseling. They want a proactive firm that is capable of providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the Brazilian scenario, one that can simplify complex realities and anticipate needs instead of just remedying immediate problems and situations"

Talent development on a global scale
Serving and representing clients with business interests in various parts of the world requires exemplary knowledge of Business Law. To improve our professionals’ skills and specializations, the firm has a longstanding tradition of referring them to postgraduate (LL.M.) courses at renowned foreign universities.
After completing the course, our lawyers work for a year at international firms before returning to Brazil, providing opportunities for their development while strengthening our relationships with partnering firms. We also receive lawyers from international law firms at our offices in Brazil.
